Optically, crystalline quartz is used extensively as a wave retardationmedium, using the birefringent properties for use in quarter-wave platesand in polarizers. Quartz is mined naturally, but more commonly producedsynthetically in large long faceted crystals. 
Quartz is positive birefringent.
